Misfortune brought young man’s goals of finishing matric to a screeching halt
It's been four months since the fateful accident that left 18-year-old Ashton Basson in a condition that has rendered the right side of his body fully paralysed.
ALBERTON – The teenager was due to write the last two exams in his matric finals before he could go on to make his dreams of being a medical doctor a reality.
However, on November 22, 2014, Ashton was involved in a car accident near the Meyersdal Eco Estate. The vehicle Ashton was driving was a complete wreck.
According to his sister, Nikita Basson, young Ashton lost the use of his speech, the use of one side of his body and one of his lungs was punctured in the accident.
“On the day of the accident, Ashton called mom and told her he was on his way home. He was only 15 minutes away when the accident happened,” recalled Nikita. It’s important to note that Ashton was not making use of his cellphone when the accident occurred, the call to his mother was made earlier.
The young man is currently unable to care for himself, but he has the support of his family who are committed to taking turns in caring for him.
Medical bills accumulated after Ashton’s release from hospital have forced the Basson family to reach out to good Samaritans to assist with donations to get Ashton an electric wheelchair to help him move around.
The family are planning to host a soccer event to raise funds for the wheelchair. Although the final date has not yet been confirmed, Nikita Basson can be contacted on 076 817 5022 for enquiries. Go to Ashton’s Journey on Facebook for more information on Ashton’s progress.
