EMM puts learners in the driver’s seat
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality with the Gauteng Provincial Department of Education intend to help high school learners obtain their learner's licences.

ALBERTON – Grade 11 and 12 learners will be the first recipients of an initiative enabling them to get their learner’s licences for free.
Ekurhuleni has, in partnership with the Gauteng Provincial Department of Education, pledged to assist high school learners with obtaining driving knowledge while still at school.
“The aim of the project is to instil the culture of adhering to the rules of the road in young people’s minds, as well as to do away with the irregularities of acquiring driver’s licences,” said metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe.
The Department of Education will provide financing for the project, while Driver’s Licence Testing Centres (DLTCs) will offer professional services, such as the applications for learner’s licences, issuing of learner’s licences and learner’s licence classes for the scholars.
According to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, 141 of the 161 high schools in Ekurhuleni are participating in the programme. Grade E DLTCs, currently located in Tsakane and Thokoza, are also involved in the project.
The satellite centres also offer services such as the renewal of motor vehicle licences, application for the renewal of driver’s licences and the renewal of public driving permits to the community at large, at normal municipal licensing tariffs.
The DLTCs’ operating hours are from 08:00 until 15:00 on weekdays, and they also operate on Saturdays, from 08:00 until 12:00, to accommodate the scholars. The centres close on the last Saturday of every month.
Schools that are interested in enlisting in the programme may contact Ronald Fillies on 011 999 0227, or at Ronald.Fillies@ekurhuleni.gov.za for more information.
