Early Christmas for children’s home

Veronique Kuit (15) a Miss SA Schools finalist, reached out to the St Mary’s Children’s Home in Rosettenville.

Veronique Kuit (15), a Grade nine pupil at Alberton High School and a finalist in the Miss SA Schools competition, treated 66 children from the St Mary’s Children’s Home in Rosettenville to an early Christmas party.

Contestants in the Miss SA Schools competition are required to reach out to the community. “I started modelling last year and I have done very well since then. My aim with this competition is not just about winning, but to be able to make a difference in other people’s lives,” explained Veronique.

To help Veronique with her outreach project Mayfair Gearbox donated R20 000 towards her Xmas in October project. The donation enabled her to buy and individually wrap 66 presents with each child’s name written on it, and to ensure that each child also received a cupcake and a goodie bag.

“I am so happy to see all the happy faces, it makes my small input much more worthwhile,” said Veronique.

Veronique said she is also reaching out to the Alberton Old Age Home and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). “I have chosen them because old people are so easily forgotten, yet they have made a huge difference in the past and the animals can’t speak for themselves.”

The children at the St Mary’s Children’s Home thanked Veronique and said she sets an example for them to follow that it is not always about receiving but also about giving back.

Veronique thanked Jannie Olivier, her school principal, for his support and assistance in raising R4 800 at the school for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa).

The final of the competition will be held on October 31 in Bela-Bela. For this gala evening Veronique has to wear a yellow hat that she has to design and create herself in solidarity with children who have been diagnosed with cancer.
