From January 21, executive mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele will embark on the Adopt-a-School drive, in terms of which he will donate school uniforms to those in need.

As the new academic year unfolds, the City of Ekurhuleni will be doing its bit to ensure that less fortunate children are afforded an education.

From January 21, executive mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele will embark on the Adopt-a-School drive, in terms of which he will donate school uniforms to those in need.

During the following week he will host the annual Academic Excellence Awards, at which learners from the Class of 2015 will be awarded bursaries.

The Adopt-a-School visits will begin on Thursday, January 21, at Thoko Thaba Secondary School, in Thokoza, followed by Winnie Mandela Secondary School in Tembisa, on Friday.

Phelang School, in KwaThema, will be visited on Tuesday, January 26.

On Wednesday, January 27, the Academic Excellence Awards will be held in the Kempton Park City Hall under the theme “Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers” and will see deserving learners being presented with bursaries from the Ekurhuleni Community Bursary Fund and the Executive Mayor’s Tertiary Assistance Fund, for the 2016 academic year.

The awards ceremony will commence with an interactive breakfast with the mayor, where the top achievers will share their journey through matric with Gungubele. This will be followed by the acknowledgment of the best performing schools and most improved priority schools in each district.
