LOOKING for a wonderful family outing, which is local, lekker and free? Come and enjoy a walk in the natural beauty and surroundings of the Kliprivier Nature Reserve (KNR). Open from 06:00 until 18:00, seven days a week with no entrance fee.

The gateway to the nature reserve has just been finished and the surrounding garden areas are filled with lovely plants, flowers, bushes and trees. Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) workforce have been active in the gardens and at the entrance to the nature reserve for about 18 months. Johannesburg South Garden Club members have also donated many plants which have enhanced the gardens. The members assist with planting and a bit of gardening and The Happy Hobblers walking group has also lent a hand. The end result is breathtaking and well worth a visit.

For families with younger children, they will enjoy the play equipment which is situated before you enter the nature reserve. Shaded seating areas offer peace and tranquillity where you can rest after a walk in the reserve.

The reserve is steeped in history and an abundance of fauna and flora and is home to 650 species of indigenous plants and trees. There is also Iron Age settlements dating from about 1500 and the ruins of a house built in 1850 by voortrekker Sarel Marais.

Guided hikes take place every second and fourth Sunday of the month. These start at 08:00 during the warmer months (September to April) and 09:00 in the cooler months (May to August). Horse trails can also be arranged.

All guided walks last about three hours. Wear good walking shoes, a hat, sunblock and bring water and snacks. Binoculars are recommended for bird walks.

*Drive down Peggy Vera Road in Kibler Park, past the Kibler Park Recreation Centre (on your right, if driving from Swartkoppies/ Main Road) and only a short way after, on the right hand side, you’ll see the Entrance Precinct. Information brochures are available at the security check at the main gate and then park your car in the parking area and come and see what awaits you.

*Directions from the M1S. Pass Gold Reef City, pass off-ramp to Nasrec, lookout for the Vereeniging – R82 sign, making sure you don’t end up on the N12 to Bloemfontein (be in the right lane). Continue on the R82, passing Columbine Avenue off-ramp (Southgate Shopping Centre on your right). Travel three kms and turn left at the first traffic light into Pierpont Drive, there is a sign pointing to Kibler Park. Follow this road for about one km until you get to a fork (there is a small island).Take the left fork (Pierpont Drive) and almost immediately a right fork. Continue on this road (Pierpont) to the T-junction on Peggy Vera Road and turn left. Pass the Klipriviersberg Recreation Centre on your right and turn right into the new KNR entrance precinct immediately after the recreation centre.
