Speed unit looks out for speedsters

The offenders were released after posting bail of R1,000 each.

THE R556 stretch of road between Kliprivier and Vaal roads is notorious for horrific accidents.

Excessive speeding was recently noticed between 18:00 and 22:00 and the stretch of road was targeted by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Speed Unit. The operation yielded eight speedsters who ended behind bars, with two other drivers fined R700 each for excessive speeding on this 80km/h zone.

One other driver was given a fine of R500 for not having his driving licence with him in the vehicle. “126km/h was the speed at which a 31-year-old driver in a white Toyota Quantum was clocked at around 18:14 claiming that he was late to pick up staff,” said members. The second highest speed was 115km/h by a 47 year old male in a Ford Ranger LDV who said he had no reason for committing the offence. The rest of those arrested clocked speeds of between 113km/h and 114km/h.

The offenders were released after posting bail of R1 000 each. All the eight offenders were charged with reckless and negligent driving at Brackendowns Police Station. They are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.
