Rhythm City star visits Abbotts College

FIONA Nay, an actress from Rhythm City, visited Abbotts College Johannesburg South recently and shared her life story about growing up in the South and how she became an actress.

“I matriculated from Sir John Adamson High School in 2002 and wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do with my life. I first worked at the Standard Bank call centre but didn’t enjoy it at all. Next I studied at Personal Training Group Instructing and Basic Science, and then went on to work on an international cruise Liner (Steiner) as a fitness director. It was fabulous for a while and I saw many countries.

“Once back ashore I worked in a gym and was headhunted by a sheikh, becoming his personal trainer in the Seychelles. Life was great, but I felt like I needed something else to stretch my mind,” said Fiona.

Fiona came back to SA and appeared in a few adverts on TV and then she decided she wanted to be an actress. “I hadn’t attended drama school, but I sent my CV to Rhythm City and kept phoning the producer. Finally I got my chance to audition, gave it my all and got the job. I’ve been on Rhythm City now for five years, playing Fiona, as well as appearing in a few theatre productions. I love what I do and wouldn’t want to do anything else,” she said.

Advice she gave to the learners at Abbotts College was to believe in yourself, surround yourself with good people and stay away from drugs and peer pressure.

Fiona is engaged to Andisa Kani, actor John Kani’s son. They have been married traditionally. Her Xhosa name is Onikwa Kani. They have a baby daughter, Zia Kani, who is 15 months old.
