JRA condemns illegal industrial action by workers

Management of the JRA strongly condemns the illegal strike action currently being undertaken by some employed union members who are staging sit-ins at depots and causing disruptions in the Johannesburg CBD.

THE planning, design, construction, operation, control, rehabilitation and maintenance of the roads and storm water infrastructure in the City of Johannesburg will be affected because the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) workers are on strike.

Its members were in the Johannesburg CBD on 24 February singing, burning objects and disrupting traffic.

The management of the JRA strongly condemns the illegal strike action undertaken by some employed union members who are staging sit-ins at depots and causing disruptions in the Johannesburg CBD.

The JRA board and management are aware of the grievances raised by SAMWU and are addressing them through appropriate internal channels.

JRA hereby reiterates that some of the matters raised have been demonstrated to require City Level Resolution. The JRA cannot act unilaterally on these matters and is subject to the City of Johannesburg processes. However, where matters are well within the JRA’s jurisdiction, the negotiation process will be reconstituted, and JRA will work hard to resolve such matters.

“We have created an environment that is conducive to progressive engagements within the JRA, and management are committed to resolving the issues amicably. In the interim, contingency plans have been activated to deal with service delivery aspects and we implore employees to resume their core duties and allow the process to conclude, and reiterate that the ‘no work, no pay’ principle will apply.

“The community are alerted to the fact that our ability to attend to road-related issues and faulty traffic signals reported within the agreed Customer Service time frames is currently compromised, and to this end we thank the community for their patience and understanding until final resolution on the illegal strike can be reached. All CAPEX infrastructure projects, including the M1 Freeway bridges rehabilitation projects, will continue as planned, without interruption,” explained Mpho Kau, the acting managing director.
