Be a responsible pet owner

The SPCA has written some tips for all pet owners to follow so they can be responsible and treat man's best friends with the kindness they deserve

THE Easter holidays will soon be upon us and if you are going away, what arrangements have you made for your pets?

You cannot leave dogs and cats without care and it is important to make suitable arrangements in advance as kennel spaces get booked up quickly.

If you wish to board your pet you must ensure their vaccinations are up to date as proof will be required by the boarding kennel/cattery in question.

If you decide to leave your pets at home, then you must either get a house sitter to stay in your home and care for your pets or arrange for someone reliable to feed and check on them daily.

It is also very important that you inform your pet sitter of your local vet and their number as well as what to do should your dogs inadvertently escape your property. If this happens, you need to tell your pet sitter that having checked the local area they should report the missing dogs to the SPCA immediately. Ensure you give them the SPCA number and address (011 907 1568, Lincoln Road, General Alberts Park), so that they can check to see if your dogs are there.

Too many people don’t bother and the SPCA ends up with numerous strays who could be returned home sooner.

Please be a responsible pet owner. Your pets give you unconditional love 365 days a year.
