Ekurhuleni water quality

The City of Ekurhuleni has among of the best drinking water in the country, according to the national Department of Water and Sanitation.

EKURHULENI’s drinking water is among the best in the country, according to the national Department of Water and Sanitation.

Ekurhuleni Mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele confirmed that the city has maintained its Blue Drop status, awarded by the department.

The Blue Drop certification rewards excellence in the area of water quality management, which surpasses the requirement of the national norms and standards by some reasonable margin.

“This prestigious certification is awarded to municipalities who, according to the certification programme criteria, achieve a score above 95 per cent.

”Ekurhuleni, at 96.25 per cent, is the top scoring municipality, leading others in Gauteng,” the mayor said at the Emoyeni Conference Centre.

The certification does not reflect only the quality of tap water, but the municipality’s ability to sustain its quality.

This includes its preparedness to deal with any incident that may pose a health risk to the public, he added

Gungubele also stated that the metro was granted the second best ranking in the area of No Drop (Non-Revenue Water loss) by the Department of Water and Sanitation for its efforts to preserve water.

Non-revenue water has been reduced from 40,3 per cent in June 2013, to 32.5 per cent in April 2016.

The City of Ekurhuleni intends to further reduce the 32.5 per cent through various community intensive programmes.

Already, 100 community ambassadors have been recruited to strengthen the water loss programme through the collecting of data and evaluating leakages.
