AFRIFORUM celebrated National Pothole Month recently, by planning to spend R2-million on fixing roads across South Africa.
The organisation started fixing the approximately 143 square meters of potholes in Alberton on June 8, at a cost of R30 000, in the areas of Alberton North, Florentia, Verwoerdpark, Brackenhurst, Brackendowns, New Market, and Raceview.
This forms part of the organisation’s DIY initiative (#selfdoen-inisiatief) and they plan to hold the necessary municipalities responsible for reimbursing them for the repairs since it is they who are meant to be doing the work.
“We need to become independent from the government and start doing these things ourselves so that it can get done,” said Wico Swanepoel, AfriForum’s Provincial Co-ordinator for Gauteng-South.
AfriForum asks the community to become involved by SMS’ing “GAT” to 45342 (R1).
The RECORD contacted the EMM (Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality) who commented by saying: “Any responsible and capable resident, business or NGO assisting in bettering the lives of the people is welcome.
“However, such cannot happen without the knowledge of the municipality. As city we know we have done and continue to do well in the area of pothole and road maintenance. Also, we cannot be expected to reimburse people for their voluntary intervention save to thank them for being responsible citizens but only if they follow all due process,” said Zweli Dlamini, EMM spokesperson in his correspondence with the RECORD.
