Illegal levy will be refunded to residents

Refuse area cleaning levy - illegal and residents will be refunded.

Residents in the Alberton areas were suddenly charged R5.70 on their electricity accounts as part of a refuse area cleaning levy… which they were never notified of.

After the RECORD received a huge amount of letters from residents regarding this matter, expressing their disgust, DA Councillor Ms Bruna Haipel contacted the RECORD, “I am referring to Ekurhuleni’s New Cleaning Levy which appeared unexpectedly and unannounced on everyone’s account in July.

“This has been the focus of most of the letters that appeared in the Alberton Record, September 11.”

On questioning the new levy, the DA Councillors, were told that this would contribute to the removal of illegal dumping.

Further investigation by DA Finance spokesperson, Councillor Eddie Taylor, showed this additional charge was found to be illegal as it was not approved as part of the budget.

At a programming committee meeting on August 22, the ruling party admitted that this levy was an “administrative bungle” which will be sorted out.

According to Ms Haipel, all residents who were charged with this levy will be refunded.
