Squatters still there after ‘eviction’
According to the complainant, the authorities have told them there is nothing they can do as they are not the owners.
SQUATTERS in Meyersdal recently got their illegally constructed structures destroyed.
On July 10, police burnt down illegal structures erected by squatters on an empty plot situated right next to a residential area.
After receiving complaints from one of the residents living in the immediate vicinity, the RECORD contacted the authorities, but received no feedback or help regarding this problem.
Clr Izak Berg got involved and things started to happen from there.
“We live in Extension 12 of Meyersdal and these squatters have been here for more than three years already, we cannot seem to get them out,” says a resident who wishes to remain anonymous. The resident adds, “It’s very unpleasant: they use the piece of land as a toilet, which attracts flies, not to mention the disgusting smell and health risk it causes. They wash themselves in full view and they get very rowdy and loud sometimes, and I often see them staring at me, which makes me feel uneasy and uncomfortable. They also use water from the site where a house is being built.
The CPF and Metro Police have destroyed the structures, but the squatters remain and the problems persist. I don’t know what to do anymore.”
According to the complainant, the authorities have told them there is nothing they can do as they are not the owners.
The RECORD is keeping an eye on the situation and will keep readers updated on any developments in this regard.
