EMPD strike during Bumper to Bumper campaign

Metro Police crack down on illegal hawkers during their Bumper to Bumper campaign.

METRO Police cracked down on illegal hawkers during their Bumper to Bumper campaign.

Hawkers plying their trade illegally in Palmridge ran away and left their goods behind when the EMPD approached them on Friday, August 12.

The Bumper to Bumper operation focused on Celtis and Teebos streets, between 14:00 and 22:00.

The main offence committed by the hawkers was occupying the sidewalks in such a manner that pedestrians were compelled to encroach onto the roadway, putting their lives at risk.

Five sets of bed bases and mattresses, 40 brooms, 12 9kg gas cylinders, 18 bicycles, 20 dozen packs of disposable nappies, 60 plastic basins, several kitchen utensils as well as fruits and vegetables were confiscated.

The hawkers can reclaim their goods from EMPD on condition that they produce a permit or make a payment of R200. They also need to pay R150 for storage fees. Highly perishable goods not claimed within 48 hours will be discarded.
