Sheldon proves you are never too young to make a difference

A YOUNG boy from Alberton has given children at a school in Thokoza the chance to access knowledge through books.
On Friday, September 16, Sheldon Spear (11), a Grade Six learner from Waterstone College, who runs his own initiative, called Need2Read, opened his second container library this year at Mohlodi Primary School.
Sheldon started Need2Read in 2014, because he wanted to share his love of reading with other children. He started a Facebook page and asked people to donate good quality children’s books.
The joyous celebration ceremony at Mohlodi Primary included speeches, poems, singing and dancing, and the library was officially opened.
The container was organised by Clr Sarah Wissler, from the New South Residents Association, and donated by AGA Transport. Uwe Krupke, from KK Shelving, installed and donated the shelving.
Thousands of the books were donated by the CEO of Exclusive Books, Benjamin Trisk, and the rest by members of the community.
Dignitaries at the opening ceremony included Bongani Ngobese (Mohlodi Primary School principal), Wissler, Gertrude Tseki from the education department, members of the school’s governing body, and Sheldon and his family.
“Books are a gift that you can open again and again,” Sheldon said, quoting Garrison Keillor, and added that the learners and staff must enjoy their gift.
This young man is making a difference in the lives of many children, helping to give them the opportunity to read and grow, to better themselves and to open new worlds and opportunities, by giving them books to read.
Sheldon is a great example of how, regardless of age and resources, someone can truly make a difference if they try.
