The City of Ekurhuleni removed a 37.5m2 billboard, illegally erected along the N12/ R24 split in Bedfordview, on Thursday, September 22.
The structure was erected without municipal permission along the national road and the City could not trace its owner. It also posed a danger to motorists as it was found to be on a shallow and poorly constructed foundation supported by tie ropes.
“This structure is an accident waiting to happen, it could be easily blown over into the road causing a major accident that could claim innocent lives or cause serious injuries.
“The City of Ekurhuleni strongly condemns the infringement of municipal by-laws and warns lawbreakers that the city will come down strongly on them,” said the Ekurhuleni spokesperson, Themba Gadebe.
Offenders found to be illegally erecting structures that have not been approved by the municipality will be charged a fine of up to R200 000.
Ekurhuleni has identified close to 3 000 illegally erected billboards. A tender process is currently underway to identify a contractor that will assist the municipality to demolish all unapproved structures.
