MAYBERRY PARK: One could only imagine the eyebrows he raised at this year’s South Africa’s Got Talent when he signed up as a ventriloquist.

Gerrard was inspired by former America’s Got Talent winner who also entered the competition as a ventriloquist. He says, “I thought it was pretty cool seeing a ventriloquist win the competition.

“From the time I saw a ventriloquist I was amazed by his talent and I wanted to do what he did.”

Although one would imagine there would be countless lessons required to master the skill, Gerrard only needed one lesson and he was good to go. “After I went for a lesson, the man told me I did not need to come back, because I had already got the skill,” he says.

Moving forward, he bought a dummy and watched a number of videos on ventriloquism which helped him get better in what he did.

Together with his friend Charlie, a 10-year-old boy who enjoys coming up with new songs, they have impressed the judges and amused the audience.

Besides entertaining crowds with his ‘friend’ Charlie; Gerrard also enjoys playing drums and having fun with friends or family over a number of board games available. The only time he practices every day is when he has an event coming up.

Should he win the competition, he wants to spend the money on more dummies, buying his brother a car and giving 20 per cent of his winnings to the church he attends.
