Pets get blessed by Catholic priest

In spite of the very strong winds, a fairly sizeable group of people braved it to get their beloved pets blessed.

All of God’s creatures are important, was the message when there was a pets blessing ceremony held at St Therese’s Catholic Church in Alberton on Saturday, October 8.

Friar Kevin Bugler went around blessing pets, mostly dogs, with the occasional cat thrown in the mix and needless to say, not always pleased with the water poured on them.

The ceremony was held to celebrate the feast of St Francis and was attended by several families and their furry friends.

Animal lovers got the opportunity to donate pet food and contribute monitarily to the SPCA. The animals were also encouraged to eat cooked mince and dog food, cat food, budgie seed, carrots, rabbit food etc.; as well as some treats for their humans too.

Things got underway with a welcome – an opening hymn – and a few short speeches by the friar and manager of the Alberton SPCA, plus a special appearance by Sue Green from JOY Dogs who spoke about the work they do. The dogs even showed off some of their tricks.
