World-class foodies to represent South Africa in the USA

Some of South-Africa's braai legends have left for the USA to compete in BBQ (barbecue) competitions held across the country.

SOME of South-Africa’s braai legends have left for the USA, to compete in BBQ (barbecue) competitions across the country.

On Tuesday, October 18, the team got together and gave a few very lucky guests the opportunity and privilege to experience their food first-hand, before heading off to the United States.

The meat, cooked in the Southern style of ”low and slow”, included two different flavours (spice and wood used) of chicken wings, as well as the most delicious beef brisket, pork shoulder and ribs, similar to what would be prepared during the competition.

This is the fourth time the team will be taking on the rest of the world in this style of BBQ and say they’ve learned a lot and that they have a better idea of what the judges generally look for and like.

Piet Marais, one of the team members, could, unfortunately, not make the tour, as he had other responsibilities to see to, but that left a vacancy for a big fan of the group, Allan Ridley, to join them.

“The people over there are really friendly and helpful and will go out of their way to help and be accommodating,” says head chef “Borries” Bornman, owner of local guest house, Borrisimo’s.

“We’ve met some really amazing people, one of whom actually helped to organise an RV (recreational vehicle), for us to get around when we’re over there.”

Other members include BraaiBoy, inventor of the first ever underwater braai (yes, it’s a thing), holder of several Guinness world records and the man who has braaied every day for the past few years.

Another star is John Grundlingh, one of the duo of “Weskus Annas”, who won last year’s Ultimate Braaimaster.

With this team representing South Africa, the flag can fly high and proud and the food can speak for itself.

Good luck to the boys. Make us proud.
