Leopards are also endangered
Caxton has been very generous in helping us raise money for the Leopard Conservation Project
The Leopard Conservation Project (LCP) recently visited the Caxton Joburg South offices, to offer their gratitude. Andrea Combrink, Autodealer sales representative, helped the LCP raise approximately R25 000 for one of their new projects.
Fred Berrangé established the Leopard Conservation Project (LCP) in 2000 and together with other concerned citizens, has had the privilege of conserving leopards in many different locations throughout Southern Africa.
The Organisation was registered as a non-profit, section 21 Company in 2007. The focus has primarily been to protect leopards from poaching, poisoning, trapping and over-hunting. The focus has shifted in recent years however, to include the collection of data on population and territory size, plus the genetic relatedness and diversity of leopards within different regions.
“We all at the LCP, want to thank Andrea and Autodealer for helping raise awareness for the leopards. Many people don’t know that leopards are also in trouble; it’s not only the rhinos. We’re out there on the ground and lost in the bushes – and we appreciate all the extra help, in raising awareness,” said Berrangé.
LCP has captured, darted, collared and released a number of animals into suitable environments with GSM cell phone collars – and now monitors their movements remotely, through the use of cutting edge technology.
Collaring these animals, has enabled LCP to collect morphometric (physiological) data that will contribute to a better understanding, of how these animals are equipped and affected by the challenges they face.
Little is known about the population numbers of leopard in Southern Africa. Due to their elusive nature, ability to adapt to almost any environment and in some instances extensive territories, estimates are sketchy and unsubstantiated in many areas.
“We hope that we leave people with something to think about. Caxton has been very generous in helping us raise money and we appreciate the amazing support. The funds will be used to help the animals and one leopard in distress. We already have a project to help one of the leopards, but we didn’t have funds. We’re glad that we can now help this leopard,” said the CEO.
