Alberton Remedial School welcomes Mobile Zoo for a day
“This is how we want to teach, because the kids won’t forget it.”
IT was time for children to get up close and personal with all sorts of animals, and what a fun time they had!
Alberton Remedial School in Brackenhurst provided learners with the opportunity to learn about animals when MobileZoo came to visit them.

On Monday morning, March 27, the learners eagerly awaited the arrival of the MobileZoo.
They were expecting to be amazed and indeed they were!

MobileZoo is owned by Fanie Barnardt and provides an educational, interactive experience involving different animal species. This include birds, such as the sulphur-crested cockatoo and blue and gold macaw; insects, such as tarantula spiders and scorpions; reptiles, such as tortoises, snakes and iguanas; and mammals, such as chinchillas, hedgehogs and marmoset monkeys.
Fanie, with the help of his assistant Gift Dube, showed the animals to the learners and even allowed them to be touched.

He also presented a lot of interesting facts about the animals and encouraged the learners to be environmentally conscious and considerate towards other species.
The children were very excited and asked loads of questions. They were also very open to engaging with Fanie and the animals. Lindsay Stephen, the school’s foundation phase head of department, commented: “This is a great way to learn. They will remember it for a long time, because it’s fun.”
Lindsay is also the founder of Alberton Remedial School, which was established in 2012. Today, there are just over 100 learners enrolled.

The idea of bringing MobileZoo to the school, according to Lindsay, was to provide learners with a different way of learning.

“Getting the children out of the classroom and teaching them about animals is just a different thing that I don’t think other schools often do,” she says. “This is how we want to teach, because the kids won’t forget it.”
