Demo proves to be educational

Numerous emergency service units gave demonstrations to the learners of Bracken High School to educate them.

BRACKENDOWNS – SAPS, along with other units, held a demonstration of hijacking and the K9 units at Bracken High School on October 8.

SAPS members explained how the dogs can sniff out any drug such as dagga, cocaine, heroine and CAT among other narcotics.

Other emergency services who attended on the day, and played a valuable role in informing and educating the learners, were Metro Tracing Units, Metro Intervention Units (SWAT), SAPS Mounted Horse Unit, SAPS Brackendowns members, CPF, Youth Desk and Emer-g-med medics.

The members staged a hijack scenario and educated the learners on what procedures are followed should something like this happen. The learners were also taught to cooperate if they were hijacked, “Your car, cellphone or money is not worth your life,” they said.

Lindy Moloi of Brackedowns SAPS said, “There are a few of us who are part of a safety committee, after we do the demonstration and show the learners what we do on a daily basis, everybody wants to join the police.”

An hour of anticipation and a little adrenaline of gun shots (with empty casings) left the children inspired and motivated.

Another SAPS member explained how murder and crime is increasing and that this year alone 40 police officers were killed in the line of duty. This statement got a reaction from the entire school … the head girl thanked them for their hard work and dedication to the community and the people they protect.
