Community objects to retirement village

Gene Fivaz and Bruna Haipel are in the process of arranging meetings to analyse these issues further. The RECORD will soon notify the public when these meetings will take place.

ON Monday, April 3, a few community members discussed their objections to the development of the retirement village in Southcrest. Alderman Bruna Haipel and ward committee member Gene Fivaz was also present at this meeting, which took place in the Alberton Council Chambers building.

Referring to the article “Public grill developers on plans for old age home” found in the March 22 issue of the RECORD – readers from Southcrest expressed their disappointment in the article, requesting a follow-up article to reveal their objections to the development.

“First of all, great uncertainty exists on the description of this development,” says Gene Fivaz. “Let’s rather call it a retirement village instead of an old age home. There is no guarantee that only old people will always live here.” Ricky Mans wrote to Alderman Bruna Haipel on the same issue, stating: “A concern was raised about the cost per unit and if these are not sold successfully, it will be changed to normal dwellings.”

As was discussed in this meeting, the key objections against the development involve:

  • Environmental impact (water, flora, fauna and historical/archaeological interferences)
  • Water supply (community members are concerned about how the development will affect the already inadequate water supply in Southcrest)
  • Sewerage (community members are concerned about how the development will worsen sewerage problems in the area)
  • Blasting of stone (Gene Fivaz proposed that, because it will disturb the whole of Southcrest, developers should be fined heftily when blasting stone, or provide credible guarantees that they will not blast stone at all)
  • Traffic implications
  • The six-storey building’s interference with surrounding residents’ view
  • Satellite view discrepancy
  • Storm water runoff and flooding in surrounding roads
  • Population density
  • Residents want to interface with the future church clergy of the retirement village

Gene and Bruna are in the process of arranging meetings to analyse these issues further. The RECORD will soon notify the public when these meetings will take place.
