Mikayla loves to capture moments

She is young but very talented.

MIKAYLA Venter (18) is a matric learner from Hoërskool Alberton who has a talent and the right eye for photography. She got her first camera as a gift from her dad, Kevin Venter, when she was only seven years old.

The RECORD caught up with her to find out more about her passion and the life of an 18-year-old.

1. Where did you grow up?

Alberton. I have been living in Alberton all my life. I feel that the stability of living in one place has helped me grow into the person I am today.

2. Could you give some personal background on yourself?

I’m still a scholar so there is not much to tell. I’ve been dating Brandon van der Berg from the same school for the past two years.

3. Are you involved in any community organisations?

Yes, I have been involved with community service hosted by LewenSentrum Church.

4. Who inspired you to take up photography ?

My dad, Kevin, who is a keen photographer and has been doing photography as a hobby.

5. For how long have you been a photographer?

My dad gave me my first camera when I was only seven years old. And I have been doing this ever since.

6. What are your goals as a photographer?

I would like to pursue a career in photography after school.

7. Tell us about yourself.

I’m the only child. I went to Laerskool President Steyn and I’m currently in Hoërskool Alberton where I’m deputy head girl. I’ve always tried to be involved in everything that the school offers. I play first team hockey, I do athletics, cross-country and public speaking and I’m part of the school’s marketing and social media team.

8. Tell us about an accomplishment you are proud of.

Being elected as deputy head girl and also the time where I’ve done a photo shoot where my photos were used as a CD cover.

9. What does it take to become a photographer?

Well, first of all, you must have a passion for photography and you must be creative. It also takes a lot of practice.

10. Who is your role model, and why?

The photographer Johan Orton. I love his work as a photographer. He is the official photographer for ASICS and the Springbok rugby team.

11. Tell me about a project or accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career.

I am proud to say that I did my first wedding photo shoot a few weekends ago.

12. What’s your superpower, or what’s your spirit animal?

I don’t have a spirit animal but I do see a butterfly to be very inspirational, transforming from an egg to caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly.

13. Are you a giver or a taker?

I’m most certainly a giver. I treasure seeing other people happy.

14. Favourite hangout?

My parent’s house.

15. Three things you cannot live without?

My camera, cellphone and most certainly not my hair straightener.

16. Favourite song?

I listen to all kinds of music.

17. What are you afraid of?

This is going to sound very funny, but I’m afraid of birds.

18. What are your hobbies?

Action hockey and cross-country.

19. What honours/awards have you received?

I’ve received honours at school for academics, public speaking, leadership, cross-country and athletics.

20. How do you keep a healthy work/life balance?

I always make time to play and spend time with my family.

21. What do you like the most about photos?

You capture time and memories.

22. What is your life motto and why?

Luke 6:31 “Do to others as you would have them do to you.”

23. What do you do in your spare time?

I spend time with my friends and watch movies.
