Mundell’s Hairdressing supports Lerato Home

On April 22, Mundell’s will be hosting a market day at the Elysium Centre party venue, right across their store. All proceeds will be donated to Lerato Children’s Home.

ON Wednesday, March 22, the RECORD and Mundell’s Hairdressing, from Brackenhurst, Alberton, paid a visit to Lerato Children’s Home, in Meyerton.

Mundell’s has decided to sponsor the children with a haircut every month, and one of them will be given the opportunity to become a professional hairdresser.

Lerato Children’s Home is home to 18 children who have been abused and/or neglected. Their ages vary from one year to 16 years. They are now the “children” of Pine and Lienie Pienaar. Even though only a few of them are related, they all speak of each other as being brothers and sisters, and of Pine and Lienie as their “papa” and “mamma”.

“Our vision is to raise each child lovingly and give them a sense of family and belonging,” says Lienie. “We sit around the big table every night and eat our dinner together. Each child gets a turn to pray and each one has their own chore they must do. They need to learn responsibility and independence, while getting as much love and support as possible.”

The home itself is cosy and the children share bedrooms according to gender.

While the older girls help in the kitchen and take care of the younger kids, the boys show us the koi pond, chicken coop and woodwork workshop.

SHARING IS CARING: Children share rooms like real brothers and sisters. Pine and Lienie Pienaar try to give them everything they can.

One of the boys, who shall not be named, is in charge of tending the vegetable garden. He is only 15 years old but he clearly has an amazing sense of responsibility and ambition. The vegetables he has grown, including green peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers and chillies, are quite impressive.

Lerato Children’s Home strives to be completely self-sustainable, hence the veggie garden and workshop. They plan to open their very own charity shop. They are, however, always welcoming of donations, unless it is money.

Pine explains: “We don’t want money. We can generate our own. However, any physical donations, such as clothes, food or old things that people want to throw away, we will gladly accept. We need things to sell in our charity shop that we want to open soon. So far, the children will make pottery and plates and sell them – they’re so good at arts and crafts.”

Pine mentions that petrol, stationery, prepaid electricity, water and shelving for the charity shop are the biggest necessities for them at this point.

Mundell’s Hairdressing was touched by the home’s story. In addition to sponsoring each child from Lerato Children’s Home with a monthly haircut, they also want to be the drop-off point for donations to the home.

Anne Craill from Mundell’s says: “We would like to offer one child the chance to study and become a professional hairdresser someday. It’s our way of showing we really care.”

VEGGIE GARDEN: Lerato Children’s Home grows its own vegetables. This garden is maintained by a proud 15-year-old.

Mundell’s is planning to host a market day later this year at the Elysium Centre party venue, right across the store. All proceeds will be donated to Lerato Children’s Home. Anyone who donates will receive two free vouchers from Mundell’s, valued at R100 each. The RECORD will place a notice closer to the time.

If you want to donate to Lerato Children’s Home, give Anne a call on 071 113 5585 or visit Mundell’s Hairdressing in Brackenhurst to drop off your donations. Keep your eyes peeled for the market day notice later this year – you will want to bring your friends and family too.
