GPG commemorates International Day Against Drug Abuse

Four recovering addicts shared their success stories to encourage others to do the same and remain drug-free.

ON Monday, June 26, the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) commemorated International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at the Mabopane Indoors Centre, Pretoria North, by encouraging recovering addicts/service users to maintain sobriety.

The majority of service users came from Mabopane and surrounding communities and were encouraged to share their success stories and motivate those who are still struggling to stay clean.

“Aftercare is a key component in living a successful life of recovery and sobriety,” said Mbangwa Xaba on behalf of GPG. In Gauteng, a total of 22 882 service users accessed the treatment programmes and only 6 066 were participating in an aftercare programme during the 2016/2017 financial year. However, the After Care programmes are an integral part of recovery as they provide continuing support to the recovering service user to minimise the risks of relapse and maintain sobriety. They add a level of accountability to the service user to prevent them to return to their old habits of substance abuse and to achieve a life filled with rewarding relationships and a sense of purpose.
