Not waiting for a dream job, grabbed a shovel and spade and worked

FOUR months ago a contractor, B&J Electrical, wanted men and women to work as trench diggers for electrical cables running through Eden Park to a substation in Vanguard Street and a number of single men and women applied for the job.

With the high rate of unemployment in the area, many grabbed the opportunity with both hands regardless their level of education. Some are welders, motor mechanics and others have high-level diplomas, but they took the job in exchange for a pick and a shovel.

Much unemployed youth rejected the offer in fear of being ridiculed by their peers and the community. These were the ones who thought their dignity and pride should come first.

It is clear that some people want to wait for a dream job, which sometimes never come when they can actually start somewhere and gain experience, and even more so, earn a living.

Jobs are scares and waiting for a dream job to fall in your lap, especially when you are unemployed, is simply not always going to happen.

Many community members expressed their delight and pride in noticing those who did not wait for the so called job of a lifetime but chose to dig trenches. They put their pride aside to grab the opportunity at hand.

“May this be a lesson to the youth, especially if you only have a primary school education. Don’t risk doing nothing while waiting for something better,” said one of the trench diggers, who wishes to remain anonymous.
