Closing the GAP
“There are many learners who are forced to follow the primary teaching system available, an academically-driven system, even where provision is made for the learner with special needs in education.”
THE GAP (Germinating All Potential) College, situated in Rispark, near Mall of the South, goes beyond remedial teaching.
It is headed by Renate Potgieter, who is also a teacher.
On board is Dr Tracey Stewart (educational and clinical psychologist), Christo Potgieter (mechanical engineer) and Vida Ras (head of marketing).
Presently The GAP College has two interns, Motlatsi Mofokeng and Given Tshabala, who are undergrad students assisting with teaching.
Says Renate, “There are many learners who are forced to follow the primary teaching system available, an academically driven system, even where provision is made for the learner with special needs in education.”
Dr Stewart adds, “We offer a personalised system instruction where the CAPS curriculum is adjusted to the learner’s level of understanding and, with the aid of the environment and nature, in particular, they are encouraged to apply knowledge learned in a practical, life-oriented way. These methods of teaching encourage behaviour changes in children with emotional challenges and have an extremely positive effect on those who derive more from one-on-one teaching rather than group teaching.”
The GAP College is a non-profit organisation which offers a specialised teaching programme to learners who are differently-abled. GAP College is supported by Headwise Developments, a fully registered Education and Training Development provider. The school accepts children from the age of five to 13, following a full assessment. For further information please contact Vida Ras on 084 818 0209.
