Broken Wings annual ladies’ tea

It was all very colourful and gave off a Brazilian “Mardi Gras” atmosphere.

ON August 26, Broken Wings hosted their annual ladies’ tea fund-raiser at the Alberton Methodist Church.

Since Broken Wings is a non-profit organisation, the event was in aid of their expenses. Entry fees were R100 per person, but it was well worth the price, as it included sweet and savoury finger food, juice, coffee, tea and musical entertainment by Afrikaans singer, Tobi Jooste.

BEADS AND FEATHERS: The tables were beautifully decorated under the “beads and feathers” theme.

The theme of the event was “beads and feathers” – and it was beautiful! Each table’s décor and centrepiece kept to the theme. It was all very colourful and gave off a Brazilian “Mardi Gras” atmosphere.

The kids of Broken Wings went to a lot of effort in making handmade crafts, such as painted pillowcases, ornaments and beaded jewellery, which was up for sale at the event. Fran Horn, the arts teacher for Broken Wings, said: “All these items were made with love and pride and I’m very proud of each one who helped make them. I am a very lucky teacher!”

MUSICAL GUEST: Tobi Jooste kept the ladies entertained with his lovely voice and sense of humour.

Sheryl Swanepoel, fund-raising manager of Broken Wings, handed the floor to Rina Mulder, a well-known speaker in Alberton, to open with prayer. Afterwards, Sheryl introduced the women to Tobi Jooste, who was about to give them a world-class musical performance.

“Tobi is a Jack of all trades,” said Sheryl. “Not only has he been singing since 2007 but you might also recognise him as a local TV-presenter, author, wine-blogger and producer of his own clothing line.”

WOMANLY: The beautiful tables were sure to make each woman feel special.

Tobi then proceeded with his performance, saying: “Sit back, relax, and let me take you all on a musical journey around the world.” He covered various classic songs from around the world with funny little stories and jokes in-between, making for a light and feel-good atmosphere.

RAFFLE PRIZE: This picnic basket with wine was the top prize to be won at the raffle.

A raffle was also part of the occasion and a few lucky ladies got spoiled with bubble-bath, fragrant lotion and the like when their number was drawn. The top prize was a picnic basket filled with two bottles of wine and wine glasses. Needless to say, the winners were quite excited!

The event ended on a happy note. “Thank you to all the ladies who attended and supported us today. We hope to see you again next year,” said Sheryl.

BROKEN WINGS CRAFTS: The kids at Broken Wings put a lot of effort into making these various crafts.
