Firefighter bids community farewell
James says there were some challenging times he faced, like in the 1990's during all the riots that took place.
A FIREFIGHTER from the Alberton Fire Department recently celebrated his retirement in style.
On September 29 James Sekgotlaboraga (65) enjoyed a farewell party with his fellow firefighters and some of his family.
Festivities included a delicious braai, the hall all fancied up for some dancing if the mood struck and a ceremony bidding farewell to James and handing him an award for his loyal service throughout the years.
James worked in the gardens at the station from 1975 until 1977 until he was asked if he would be interested in being an ambulance driver and so he made his way up the proverbial (and literal) ladder until he qualified as a firefighter.

James said there were some challenging times he faced, like in the 1990’s during all the riots that took place.
Of good times, James told the RECORD of an incident fairly recently: “We assisted at the scene of a vehicle accident a while back and one of the women involved in the accident brought us a big bag of sweets and treats to thank us. That was a very nice feeling,” recalled James fondly.
“I will miss it but I’ve had my time. Now the younger generation must step up,” said James.
