Murder, death stalks Alberton

Let’s hope 2018 will mean less violence and murder in Alberton and South Africa.

 

The past year has seen no shortage of deaths and murders in Alberton – here is a brief overview of just some of these.

Most recently, on the evening of November 13, a woman died after being shot an estimated nine times in her home in Brackenhurst.

On July 25, a woman’s body was found in an open veld, following similar discoveries over the period of June and July, leading to speculation about a possible serial killer being on the loose in Alberton.

A young man in the prime of his life, Ludi Vink, died on February 21 after being stabbed in the eye with a pool cue, simply for trying to make peace between the assailant and another party.

Several homeless men were discovered dead in various places around Alberton, including under a bridge, at a taxi rank and one near Alberton Police Station, mostly due to exposure and illness, in one case due to presumed drowning.

In March, the body of a murdered woman, brutalised and with the hands and feet missing, was found in Palmridge.

In June, a man’s mutilated body was found in Thina Sonke with the ears, genitals, armpits and right hand missing, leading to the conclusion that it was a muthi killing.

A police officer from Katlehong Police Station was shot dead by one of his own in a ‘friendly fire’ incident in January, leading to speculation about a cover-up and bringing into question the competency and training of police officers.

On June 23, a security officer was found dead in his car, after having been shot.

On November 1, 2016, the body of Ané Jacobs (16) was found dumped under a tree in an open piece of ground. There have still been no arrests made, nor are there any signs of the case being solved any time soon.

On November 6, a dead foetus was found in a rubbish bin, disposed of like garbage.

Let’s hope 2018 will mean less violence and murder in Alberton and South Africa.
