Body found in Alberton

"JJ was a retired soldier who fought on the border, but his life just went downhill after his marriage fell apart."

The body of a homeless man was found in New Redruth, corner of Ring Road West and Voortrekker Road, this morning, December 18.

At approximately 6.40am, Jacques Meyer, another homeless man, called over some traffic wardens busy on foot patrol to alert them to his friend’s demise.

An ambulance as well as the Alberton police were contacted by the traffic wardens. Upon the ambulance’s arrival, the man was declared dead. The traffic wardens were given a declaration of death and were still awaiting the police’s arrival at the time of RECORD’S arrival on the scene, after 8am.

According to Meyer, the deceased, JJ de Meyer, was a dear friend who had been living with him for nine months.

“He was 60 years old and suffered from epilepsy,” Meyer told the RECORD.

“JJ was a retired soldier who fought on the border, but his life just went downhill after his marriage fell apart,” he added.

“I’m all alone again,” said the forlorn friend.
