A PASSENGER was instantly killed while two drivers were injured in a crash involving three vehicles on the N3 freeway northbound just before Grey Avenue in Germiston.
An Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) rescue team from Wadeville Fire Station responded swiftly, arriving on the scene soon after a call was received at around 9.55am on Friday, December 29.
On arrival, it was found that two light motor vehicles and an articulated truck had been involved in a crash. In one vehicle there were two occupants, a male passenger who was declared dead on the scene by paramedics, and the female driver who was airlifted to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in a critical condition.
The rescue team had to use specialised equipment to recover the body of the deceased from the wreckage.
The driver of the other light vehicle was critically injured and transported to Union Hospital by ambulance. The driver of the truck escaped unharmed.
The cause of the crash was undetermined and is under investigation by the law enforcement units who were on the scene.
All four northbound lanes had to be closed for the duration of the rescue operations and on-scene investigations by the EMPD officers.
