Young champion in the making

“I see a bright future for this young girl who at just 14 is already a champion,” said her trainer.

AT the tender age of 14, Edna Kok is the new SA junior welterweight champion and nobody can stop her or stand in her way.

The young prospective boxer who is trained by Mark Stols of Sunrise Boxing Club in Extention 5, Eden park, won her title on December 15 in Duduza, Nigel at the Gauteng Amateur Boxing Organisation (GABO) where the best boxers from different provinces competed. Edna represented the Gauteng province.

According to her trainer, Kok is the best prospect from his camp.

“She wins every fight and we knew that she would win the title at the championship.

“She won every round during the title fight and after the final round her opponent had to be rushed to hospital. I see a bright future for this young girl who at just 14 is already a champion,” Stols said.

In October 2017 she won a gold medal in Sebokeng. On December 7 at the Ekurhuleni championships she did not only win gold, but was also voted the best female boxer for the junior welterweight division (63kg).

“Boxing is my passion. I like boxing because it keeps me from mischief and I would advise young girls in Eden Park to join our club and become better youths. There is a future in boxing,” Kok said.

Due to the growing number of young boys joining the club and the limited training space at Stols’ residence in Ray Phiri Street, the club will train at Opelweg Primary School from February.
