Help for matrics who fell short

Devin Linton was AMP’s top achiever with five distinctions.

Alberton Matric Project (AMP), an independent school approved by the Gauteng Department of Education, recorded strong results in the 2017 national senior certificate (NSC) exams.

Out of 110 learners who wrote the full exams, 67 passed and 15 received bachelor’s degree (university exemption) passes.

Devin Linton was AMP’s top achiever with five distinctions, for Afrikaans (home language), English (first additional language), history, maths literacy, religious studies and life orientation.

According to AMP director Quintus van den Heever, the department will allow learners who failed one or two subjects to write a supplementary exam in February or March. “Should they pass they back-date results as if they passed in November 2017. Twenty-eight learners from AMP qualified to do this, in other words 65 per cent of those who failed.

“A fact known by few is that repeaters can register for one or two subjects with us in order to get their national senior certificate,” van den Heever continued. “This enables students to pass matric and go on with their lives. At AMP those students will be offered classes for the said subject at the centre even up to the day before they write the subject they need to pass their matric.

“Children are our future,” van den Heever said. “We can’t give up on them, no matter what their circumstances – there is always a way to accomplish your dreams and get your matric certificate, and this is within reach for young and old at AMP.”
