Man (58) gives 400th donation to SANBS

“I’ve always done this because it’s a good habit."

WE have celebrated more than one person donating his or her 300th unit of blood – but not 400 units – well, that is until today. The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) in Alberton was honoured to receive the 400th donation from Gerhard Roos (58) on February 9.

Gerhard is a resident from Benoni, but he favours the Alberton SANBS branch because of its friendly staff. He is also a member of the SANBS Egoli-East Committee.

He made his first blood donation when he was 18 years old and he hasn’t stopped since. “I’ve always done this because it’s a good habit. After two months, it’s as if my body tells me: ‘Gerhard, it’s time to go and donate again’,” said Gerhard with a chuckle.

DOING GOOD DEEDS: Gerhard Roos gave his 400th donation to SANBS on February 9.

When Gerhard goes to donate, he provides SANBS with valuable platelets and plasma that combats rabies. These can only be donated after a donor has donated at least three pints of blood.

To thank Gerhard, the branch bought him a bottle of champagne and a delicious cake.

SANBS is hereby asking the community to please donate blood as often as possible since there is a major “blood drought” at the moment. Your donation can save lives. Donors and potential new donors can visit SANBS at Alberton City, first floor, across the Telkom store.
