Conversations with a stranger: An aspiring real estate agent
A day in the life of an aspiring real estate agent may not be what you expect.
THE RECORD happened to meet Gerhard Delport, a real estate intern at Data Real Estate. We got to know him a little better, and he shared with us what a day in his life is like.
Gerhard (44) is a resident of Florentia. He is married and has two children. He is currently an intern, but he aspires to be the best real estate agent around. He had worked in real estate before trying a different, more corporate career path. He did not find the corporate work environment fulfilling, though, so he returned to real estate.
A day in the life of an aspiring real estate agent might not be what you expect. Gerhard normally gets up for work at 6am. He is not the breakfast type and usually only eats around dinner time.
His workday begins either with a meeting or with him going through his emails. His responsibilities include arranging appointments, conducting house evaluations and looking for houses to sell. Gerhard does this by going door to door or cold-calling potential clients. He is often chaperoned by his principal or senior agent.
Unless he has to stay later for appointments or house evaluations when the residents are home from work, he ends work between 5pm and 7pm.
You can imagine that this career comes with challenges, especially when most people do not want to sell or buy houses. Gerhard says this is his biggest challenge.
He deals with these challenges through exercise, prayer and watching rugby in his free time. If he really wants to spoil himself, he goes hunting.
His favourite part of the job is working and interacting with people.
“People are interesting – you never know what to expect when you approach someone you’ve never met,” he says.
“This job is also a way for me to help people. Some people must buy or sell a house urgently, and I feel fulfilled when I can help them with that,” he adds.
Gerhard dreams of being so successful in his career that people will naturally associate his name with real estate. He works to achieve this by being sincere and honest with everyone he meets.
“Sincerity and honesty are expected from every good person, so that is what I must do,” he explains.
He adds, “Thank you to everyone who supports me. If you ever need a house to buy or sell, I would be very happy to help you.”
