A successful Diabetic Open Day

Diabetes was the subject of the day at the Greek Hall in New Redruth with people streaming in to learn more about diabetes and its effects.

NEW REDRUTH – For 15 years Netcare has been running the Diabetic Open Day and on November 9 they held it at the Greek hall in New Redruth for diabetics and the general public who were interested.

“The idea was to have an information day for patients to learn more about diabetes expose the diagnosis of diabetes in people, connect people and educate them how to be victorious and manage their diabetes, to facilitate and encourage them,” said Doctor Kok.

She also explained how diabetes never leaves you alone, it is a silent aspect which does not only have to do with sugar related problems, it includes cholesterol and blood pressure among other things.

Numerous stations were put up to test, measure and educate: heights, weight, sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, create awareness in patients and how to look after themselves. There were also podiatrists testing the pressure of the feet and a lab monitoring patients.

Numerous speakers spoke about diabetes and its side effects. Sylvia Rodrigues spoke about cancer and diabetes, Alta Kloppers spoke about diets, motivational speaker Prof Leon Klein and Gareth Merray from Youth with Diabetes.

Zella Young also demonstrated an exercise routine which patients could do on a chair.

The day was very successful as patients and members of the public streamed into the hall throughout the entire day wanting to know more about health and diabetes, either for themselves or for people living with someone who has diabetes.

After all the formalities people could also enjoy tea, coffee and a savoury snack.
