Money cannot buy you happiness
One man manages to stay happy even though he may not even have half of what the average Joe has.
ALBERTON – Richard Marumbwa is not wealthy, stands at robots, fathered three children, lost his hands in a fire and yet he manages a smile every single day.
Although he went to school, he only made it to grade seven and in 2009 he came to Johannesburg and has never had a proper job in his life.
Richard wakes up in the morning and makes his way to Alberton where he asks for money… money to get his children through school, money for rent and money for food.
“I never know when I will have and when I will not have, but somehow I manage to live my life. It is very difficult never knowing if I will manage to put food on my family’s table,” said Richard.
He also told the RECORD that many people help him and he classifies these people as his friends, “I come to the small community of Alberton because the people here understand me.”
Richard is adamant that he can do anything and would appreciate a job as it would help him financially. Before he was standing at robots he used to take pictures, “If someone can give me a good enough camera, I can take beautiful pictures.”
He does not want much and only wants to see his children get through school with a good education and hopefully find the jobs which they are looking for.
Many people bring him food and others give him money. “The last school term someone paid for my child’s schooling.
“I feel very happy because I have my children and friends; so many people talk to me in the mornings. A smile just makes my day and I hope I do that for other people.
“I am happy because my life could have been worse and would like to thank all my friends for all their help and support,” said Richard with a sincere smile.
He stands at the robot on the corner of Van Riebeeck Road and Ring Road East on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, so if you see him, lend a helping hand and help in any way you can.
