Inside Report with Basch: Three cheers for the community.

Three cheers for the community, hip hip hooray. This past weekend was the voter registration drive and I am happy to say that a record number of voters came out and registered.

What stood out for me was the large numbers of young people registering for the first time, this is an awesome sight because really the sooner the youth start having a say, the better.

Truly the decisions we make today will affect the choices they will have tomorrow. So it was great to see the youth, but they where not alone, many of our more senior community members came out to ensure that they too were registered and for that I am truly grateful.

This also means that if you didn’t register, well what’s your excuse if an eighty-one-year-old man and women can come out, walking aids and all then really there is no excuses.

But on a more serious note, I believe that we are seeing the start of a new phase in South African Society. It is encouraging to think that next year such a large number of registered voters will come out and have their say, this is democracy.

But I do, however, have to say that I’m not entirely surprised by this turn of events and the reason I am not is because I am a pet owner. A pet owner? Yes, and I can tell you that you can only beat a dog down so many times before it rises up to bite you and, my fellow Albertonians, the time to bite has come. So come the elections next year, bare your teeth, growl deep, raise your fur and make your mark because you’ve got to know I will.

Together we will make this country into the place we want it to be, and not the place we have.
