GLENVIEW Primary School endured a week-long crisis due to a blockage in a nearby stormwater drain, which caused a blockage in the pipes of the school.
The problem was initially reported on May 18 when it was noted by the school that sewage was being flushed out from several drain covers at the school. Despite numerous calls from the school and the department over the course of the week, the problem was not fixed.
Initial disputes, according to the school, were over the exact location of the blockage. Despite the school taking out the school plans twice to show officials where the sewerage lines run, it was claimed that the blockage was on school property and thus the school was responsible for fixing it.
The school attempted to make numerous calls to the Gauteng Department of Health and Safety during the week ending on May 25 but found the department to be unhelpful.
Of major concern to the school was the backwash of sewage, as well as their bathroom facilities overflowing. The leaking sewage created an environment that was not only unpleasant for the many children that go to school at Glenview but was also potentially detrimental to their safety.
The blockage was removed on May 28 and everything at the school was returned to normal. Concerns that the school might have to be closed for safety reasons, were averted.
