UPDATE: Mommy Shanei is slowly getting better
She has been moved to the Care Cure rehabilitation clinic in Vereeniging where she is receiving better quality care.
LAST month the RECORD published an online story about Shanei Norris – a former learner of Hoërskool Dinamika and now a young mother from Vanderbijlpark who sustained very serious injuries during a car accident and also lost her two-year-old daughter, Reanei. Currently, Shanei is slowly but surely recovering from her injuries.

The RECORD received an update on Shanei from her maternal friend and caretaker, Annelie Hunter.
Initially, Shanei was in the Sebokeng state hospital in Vanderbijlpark, but recently she has been moved to the Care Cure rehabilitation clinic in Vereeniging where she is receiving better quality care.
She now is undergoing physiotherapy for her legs every day – she did not receive physiotherapy in Sebokeng. Her right leg suffered horrible damage and must remain in a protective cast and must be kept bent at a 90-degree angle, whereas her left leg must be kept straight and cannot be bent. Her right leg has recently started forming sores where it’s bent but is being treated with as much care as possible.
Her hair got extremely tangled in Sebokeng, as it was never brushed or washed properly. She is often visited by volunteering hairdressers who try their best to untangle it for her. Annelie said Shanei is very proud of her long, ebony hair and would never forgive them if it got cut short.
Shanei is regularly visited by an occupational therapist and a psychologist. It has been determined that she suffers from short-term memory loss and that a memory lasts only about 10 minutes. It is not yet known whether this damage is permanent or temporary – time will tell.
Recently, Annelie and other friends of Shanei made a photo album of everyone important in Shanei’s life. Thankfully, she remembers everyone.
Sometimes, when those who care about Shanei visit her, they would notice that she has been crying or that she seems very sad. When she is asked what is wrong, she does not know why she is sad.
For the first time on May 30, Shanei spoke of her daughter Reanei, saying that she really missed her and that it feels as if it had been years since she last saw her. She still does not know that Reanei has died in the accident and believes she is being taken care of by Annelie’s son and his girlfriend while she is recovering in hospital.
“There is still a long road ahead for Shanei,” said Annelie. “We are eternally grateful for the thousands of people who hold her in their thoughts and prayers. We pray that she will be okay.”
