ALIDA JOOSTE: “It’s definitely needed. But, the community must be informed beforehand. It must be well-managed, there must be solid rules and I think it would be better if it’s a night shelter instead of a permanent shelter.”
THE RECORD asked a few community members if they think a shelter for the homeless people of Alberton is necessary. They all agreed that it is, and shared their reasons why. Here’s what they had to say.
PIET WILLIAMS: “Yes, a shelter is necessary, because lots of people, especially old people, have no income or place to stay. They need a shelter that will guarantee them a permanent safe haven.”DONALD RENNIE: “That would be a good idea. There are lots of people who need a place to stay. I am one of them. It’s extremely difficult to find a safe and affordable room to sleep in.”LANA VELDHUIZEN: “Yes, it’s a great idea and a well-managed shelter is actually a big necessity. There are so many homeless people and it’s heartbreaking to see. We need someone willing to establish and run this.”PETER ROSSOUW: “I definitely think a shelter is needed. Every day, I see so many young people who have nowhere to go. It’s very difficult to find a place willing to take them in. A shelter would surely help.”
