Five cent coins acceptable for shopping

A resident was advised that a 5 cent coin is no longer acceptable by a cashier at Checkers in Alberton City.

ALBERTON – A few weeks ago Rosemary Funck, an Alberton resident, was advised by a cashier at Checkers in Alberton City that 5 cent coins are no longer acceptable when paying for groceries.

Rosemary’s till slip total was R355.11 as she offered two 5 cent coins. “The cashier advised that they have been instructed not to accept 5 cent coins,” said Rosemary.

She objected, saying that 5 cent coins are still legal South African currency – but to no avail the cashier just rolled her eyes and held her hand out for some other coins. Rosemary found a 20 cent coin in her bag – which the cashier took and placed 10 cents change on the counter.

The RECORD contacted the Checkers Manager: Corporate Communications, Sarita van Wyk, “The Checkers chain accepts all coins and bank notes in circulation in accordance with the SA Reserve Bank rules.

“Checkers Alberton City will address the unacceptable service encountered by the customer with the staff member concerned and offers its apologies for the bad experience.”
