Alberton Methodist Church connects with the youth in a fun way
“We want the young people to know that they are a part of our family.”
THROUGH silliness and fun, the Alberton Methodist Church is reaching out to the youth of the community in an attempt to make each young person a part of their “family” and encourage them to express themselves positively.
The church wants to offer music lessons to its youth in the near future, and there is also an event coming up soon, called Camp Eden, which will be held for the youth close to Heidelberg. To make these opportunities possible, however, funds are needed urgently.
So youth pastor James Dunn decided that if R10 000 can be raised in five weeks for Camp Eden, he would get a tattoo on his forearm of My Little Pony. To his surprise, the amount was raised within three weeks – he now sports a very colourful new cartoon tattoo.
Reverend Jeff van der Spuy decided to follow James’ tactic. He agreed that if R10 000 can be raised again – this time for the music lesson initiative – within four weeks, he would dye his hair any bright colour.
“For Jeff, this is a big deal, because he doesn’t do extreme things,” said James with a big smile. “I personally think he should make it pink, but he’d prefer blue. I guess we’ll wait and see what colour is bestowed upon his head.”
The reason James and Jeff decided to do something so fun and silly, is to bond with the youth of the church and the community.
“We want the young people to know that they are a part of our family and we want them to also feel free to express themselves in fun and positive ways,” said Jeff. “They are always welcome here, especially if they feel like they have nowhere to turn to.”

If anyone would like to help the Alberton Methodist Church in their fund-raising attempts, it would be greatly welcome. Apart from monetary donations, musical instruments that aren’t being used anymore will gladly be welcomed for the church’s music lessons.
Donations can be brought to the church at 17 Heidelberg Road, Newmarket, or feel free to call 063 910 3773 if you would like to help.
