Crime is on the rise on Kliprivier Drive

SAPS share useful tips for when in a hijacking situation.

KLIPRIVIER SAPS want to urge motorists to be more vigilant when driving on Kliprivier Drive.

“We are experiencing a high volume of hijackings. Please be alert when driving in the area,” said Lt Col JJ Landman. Motorists must make sure their cars are locked and their windows closed when approaching a stop street. Be vigilant at all times and report any suspicious behaviour to the SAPS and your local security service provider. If your windscreen or tyre is damaged while driving, drive to a well-lit area before stopping to inspect the damage.

Do not stop for anyone who indicates they are in need of help in a deserted or high-risk area. Contact the SAPS or a security company to assist.

“Though there is a misconception that only certain makes and models are being stolen or hijacked, any vehicle can become a target,” he said. Also, let someone know if you are leaving the house.

“Let them know when you will be back as well so that if something happens to you they will be able to report on time.”

Report any form of crime to Kliprivier SAPS on 011 903 8205 or 071 675 7297.

What to do in the event of a hijacking:

• At no given time resist the attacker.

• Keep your hands visible at all times.

• Be submissive and listen to instructions.

• Do not resist once you have exited the vehicle.

• Child in the car – indicate to the suspect that you have a child in the back seat and remove the child by shielding him/her as much as possible.

• Remain calm and try to identify any useful information about the hijackers without staring at them.

• Create time and space between yourself and the threat.

• Take note of the language the suspects speak.

• Count the number of voices.

• Listen to the information the suspects share among themselves.

• Estimate the height of the suspects by comparing it to your own height.

• Identify any clothing, markings and shoes of the suspects. Some suspects change their clothes, but not their shoes.
