Driving over wet resurfaced R59 highway damaging tyres

Repaved road causes damage.

THE R59 highway has recently been re-surfaced but motorists are not happy about wet tar that damaged the tyres of their vehicles.

Roadworks are underway on the R59 between Michelle Avenue in Alberton up to Nampak Glass and then again from Meyerton to Redan.

According to a motorist, one of the lanes which have been done, was opened but the tar was still wet.

QUINTIN VAN NIEKERK: This is what Quintin’s tyres look like.

“How is this upgrading the road while the wet tar is removed by motorists. It is almost as if construction workers are in a hurry,” said the motorist.

“Not only is the traffic very bad during the day as there is only one lane open but now people have to make plans to get the tar off their tyres and other parts of their vehicles.”

WET TAR: This is how Brian Matthee’s vehicle looks like after driving on the R59.

Corné Bierman said that they should rather keep a lane closed if the tar is still wet. On social media there are more than 20 different photos of motorists complaining about the wet tar situation.

The RECORD did ask for comment from several parties on October 24 and will publish it as soon as possible. In the meanwhile, motorists can send a complaint to Ronald Filander, chief road superintendent from the Department of Roads and Transport, by sending an email to Ronald.Filander@gauteng.gov.za

After sending an email to him, you will receive an email with a claim form with instructions.

What people had to say on social media:

• Alta Clegg: “Reading these posts I wonder how much tar is still left on the road.”

• Brian Matthee: “Kyk hoe lyk ’n mens se bande van die padwerke op die R59! Hoe gaan dit die pad se toestand verbeter as al die teer opgetel word?”

• Rudi Erasmus: “Took me four hours to scrape the tar off one normal car tyre. Take the wheel off the car. Scraping tar off is not easy. Using the only tool I could find in my garage, a paint scraper and 250ml linseed oil per tyre should be enough. It’s a messy process. Two tyres now cleaned, two to go. I think we need to start a site where we can post all the damage done to our cars … surely we will get a lawyer to assist us with a class action! Nowhere are there signboards to warn against the resurfacing of the R59!”

ANOTHER ONE: Petrus Moloko Motsoko shared this photo of his tyres being covered in tar.

• Samantha Jane Koch:“ Clear paraffin will take the tar off of the car and tyres. I remember my dad’s new bakkie got plastered on the way down to Durban and we tried everything. One of the locals gave us this tip about 15 years ago and I’ve never had an issue after that to remove the tar.”

MUST SEE: On this photo, which was taken by Zandra Jordaan, you can clearly see the tar on her car’s tyres.

• Cindy-Lee Erasmus: “Use Linseed oil to remove the tar. All four of my tyres got damaged last night, who’s gonna pay for our damages ?”

• Charmaine Venter: “It was terrible and we received three stones on our windscreen from cars in front of us … unacceptable. Now we need to fix our windscreen!”

• Marike Ettlinger: Van Michelle Avenue in Alberton tot by Nampak. Dan begin dit weer in Meyerton tot Redan. Noord en Suid.

• Brenda Boyd: “Yip me too. Cleaned it off at weekend, picked up more again today.”

• Olu LukaMadella MaMaya: “Worse it creates noise on the car, those stones.”

ANOTHER ONE: Brian Mc Callum shared this photo on social media on October 23.
