Vegetable talk at the Garden Club
Linda Galvad discussed the benefits of growing one’s own food organically.
JANUARY 29’s Garden Club meeting was all about living off of your own home-grown, organic vegetables to improve your health and longevity.
The guest speaker of the day was Linda Galvad from Sought After Seedlings, who entertained Garden Club members with lots of interesting facts and perspectives.
Sought After Seedlings is Linda’s young business, which entails the sales of heirloom and organic produce seeds. Linda also frequently offers motivational talks about the importance of self-health through the food one consumes, as well as the benefits of growing one’s own food organically.
Linda also often presents talks and demonstrations on a show called Gardening 101, on the Home Channel, DSTV channel 176. “I try to help and encourage people to be the best versions of themselves that they can be, by getting proper nutrition.” said Linda.

A few key messages that Linda discussed and elaborated on included the following:
• Through proper nutrition and eating 50 percent to 70 percent of various, raw, organic vegetables per day, one can prevent or even cure any disease.
• Growing heirloom seeds organically is the best way to go when growing one’s own food.
• Prebiotics feed probiotics, with probiotics being vital to a person’s physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing. Examples of prebiotics include garlic, onions, leeks, cocoa, flaxseed and dandelion greens, among others.
• All diseases begin in the gut where good and bad bacteria are formed; this is also true for 90 percent of one’s immune system.
• A healthy gut with plenty of good bacteria staves off premature aging, as well as mood and personality disorders.
• Any and every form of sugar should be avoided at all cost, as sugar is food for bad bacteria in the gut, as well as cancer.
Garden club members were very intrigued with all these facts, their curiosities piqued. Linda was asked plenty of questions. Clearly, it was an interesting and informative meeting for all.

New members were also voted on the committee, which Mike Richardson announced. Brian Hovelmeier is the new secretary; the two new general members are Mariana Swanepoel and Wendy Winter.
After all the proceedings, everyone enjoyed tea, cake and company together. So long, until the next meeting.
