THIS is an urgent call to the community to help the many sick flamingo chicks in Kamfers Dam near Kimberley.

Thousands of chicks have been left to fend for themselves after the dams all but dried up and many of the adults were forced to leave the area in search of water. When a rescue team arrived on the scene over the weekend, they were faced with the devastation of a dam literally baked dry with empty nests, deserted eggs, dead chick carcasses and dead adult flamingos.

Among the bodies were countless dehydrated and starving chicks still clinging to life.

Onderstepoort Veterinary Animal Hospital in Pretoria is now lending a helping hand by taking in the sick and most frail little ones.

However, they are in desperate need of donations such as newspapers, old towels, Nestum stage 1 baby cereal, teddy bears for them to cuddle, frozen shrimp, frozen sardines and some medical equipment.

People who want to help can drop off donations at 88 Neville Road in Brackendowns or contact Michael on 082 401 6667.

• If you want to visit the Onderstepoort Veterinary Animal Hospital or drop off donations, send a Whatsapp to Carol Hartzenbergon 078 678 4415 or to Ilse Meyer 072 680 1111.
