The Nedbank Cup round of 16 draws conducted recently produced some exciting fixtures that will give an opportunity to clubs from amateur ranks and the National First Division (NFD) to make a name for them.
With the 12th edition of the tournament, the Nedbank Cup continues its investment in football and in community development with the R20-million total prize money on offer for the 2018/19 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season.
All 32 participating teams will walk away with at least R100 000 each, a valuable financial injection for the eight NFD and eight South African Football Association (Safa) regional teams that form part of the tournament.
The emerging leagues teams that are through to the round of 16 – Maccabi FC, Jomo Cosmos, Witbank Spurs, Mbombela United, TS Galaxy, Richards Bay and Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila – have an additional R200 000 guaranteed incentive that will be doubled should they make it through to the cup quarterfinal stages.
Only two previous tournament winners – Bidvest Wits (2010) and Kaizer Chiefs (2013) – remain in the tournament of dreams that is trademarked by the great success stories from lower division sides.
The biggest motivation for all 16 clubs, and indeed the remaining emerging tier sides with last year’s defending champions Free State Stars eliminated in the first round, is an opportunity to have a new name engraved on the coveted trophy and walking away with the whopping R7-m first prize.
The ultimate crown of lifting this coveted trophy is an opportunity of playing in the CAF Confederation Cup next year.
The last 16 fixtures will be played from February 16 to 19, with the PSL to announce exact dates, venues and kick-off times in due course.
